🚨 MIAMI HEAT INJURY NEWS! 🚨
The Miami Heat just received some unfortunate news during training camp as Dru Smith suffered a right calf strain and is expected to miss multiple weeks. Smith was projected to be Miami’s primary backup point guard behind Davion Mitchell, making this injury especially important as the Heat prepare for the preseason and the start of the 2026-27 NBA season.
But with one door closing, another one could be opening for Tre Donaldson! 👀🔥
Donaldson joined the Miami Heat on a two-way contract this summer after an impressive senior season with the Miami Hurricanes. In 35 games, including 33 starts, Donaldson averaged 16.4 points, 5.7 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game, while shooting 45.4% from the field and 35.9% from three-point range.
Now, with Dru Smith sidelined, Tre could have a major opportunity to show Erik Spoelstra and the Heat coaching staff that he can handle legitimate point-guard responsibilities.
Donaldson has experience as a facilitator, can push the pace, create off the dribble and defend at the point of attack. NBA.com specifically highlighted his ability to handle the ball, play with pace, operate in pick-and-roll situations and pressure opposing ball handlers defensively.
And there’s another interesting angle: Dru Smith himself recently praised the young Heat guards, including Tre Donaldson and Ryan Conwell, during training camp.
