36 years ago today, the Reds won the National League pennant at Riverfront Stadium with a 2-1 victory over the Pirates in Game 6 of the NLCS.
Cincinnati’s pitching staff held Pittsburgh to just one hit. Danny Jackson started, and Norm Charlton and Randy Myers finished the job. Luis Quiñones delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the seventh, scoring Ron Oester.
The Pirates threatened in the ninth, but right fielder Glenn Braggs made a leaping catch at the wall to rob Carmelo Martínez of a home run. Myers then struck out Don Slaught to seal the win.
The Reds took the series, 4-2, and reached the World Series for the first time since 1976. (mlb.com, mlb.com, baseball-almanac.com)
