Carmel Swim Club's Ellie Clarke was shooting to make the Jr Pan Pac team, but her path to the roster didn't look quite like she'd expected. On the first night of the qualifying meet, US Nationals, Clarke swam the 200 fly, finishing 3rd by .08 and putting her outside of qualification.
The next day she was entered in both the 200 free and 200 back. After having a disappointing 200 free prelim swim, Clarke decided to put her eggs in the 200 back basket after initially considering scratching the event altogether. This paid off for the high schooler, as she ended up winning the 200 Back 18&U final in 2:08.96, putting her on the Jr Pan Pacs team.
