Fifty seconds into the Lakers' second preseason game, JJ Redick burned a timeout, walked onto the floor and stood in silence drawing on his whiteboard. We went to the film to figure out exactly what set them off.
Sandro Mamukelashvili looks confused before the ball is even inbounded, Bronny James is visibly frustrated with someone, and four players end up on the same side of the floor. You do not need to be a coach to see the spacing is broken. In the huddle, Adou Thiero points to himself and tells Bronny "you said same way," an assistant gestures toward the left wing where Thiero had been standing, and Greg St Jean steps in to get everyone organized.
Here is my read: this was supposed to be a HORNS set with Thiero in the right corner. That one fix cleans up the left side spacing, which is what let the defense switch the flare screen and blow up the whole action.
We also look at the first set Redick said was run wrong. Delay action reversing to the big up top is correct, and Bronny times his cut well, but the Thiero dribble handoff makes the flare pass harder than it needs to be, Quentin Grimes holds the screen too long and cuts between two teammates, and the clock drains under seven before anyone can generate anything. Then a few more possessions where Bronny has to tell Jarred Vanderbilt where to stand, LaRavia and Bronny both have to point Mamukelashvili to the corner, and nobody seems sure whether it is a back screen or a pin down.
Anyone who has coached knows the feeling of installing a set for days and watching players line up in the wrong spots. This is what that looks like at the NBA level.
