Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge with exactly the response Xabi Alonso needed after a difficult week.

Morgan Rogers produced a brilliant individual goal to put Chelsea ahead before Cole Palmer converted from the penalty spot, but the biggest talking points came from Estevao and Romeo Lavia.

After being left unused against Liverpool, Estevao started and gave Alonso plenty to think about. He twice had goals ruled out, registered six shots and created three chances in a performance Alonso described as the “best response.”

Romeo Lavia was outstanding too, winning possession for Rogers’ opener and producing the kind of midfield display Chelsea have been waiting for. Alonso said Lavia has been in “top form” over the past three weeks, while Cole Palmer called it one of the best games he has seen him play.
