Breath Holding and Swimming Lessons 💦👶
Why do we pour water over a baby’s face during swimming lessons?
Because breath control allows safe submersions and helps children learn to confidently hold their breath in the water. 🌊
We teach children to HOLD their breath first before introducing bubbles. Blowing bubbles too early can lead to children drinking water or getting water up their nose.
Simple visual cues can help children understand breath holding:
🎈 “Balloon Face” – puff the cheeks up like a balloon
🐟 “Fish Face” – close the lips tight like a fish
Adult demonstrations are also very important. When children watch parents or teachers calmly pour water over their own face first, it helps children feel safe, relaxed, and confident to try it themselves.
Allowing children to pour water over an adult’s face can turn learning into a fun game while helping them understand what to expect in the water.
These playful activities help babies and toddlers develop breath control, confidence, trust, and water familiarity in a positive way.
Always work at each child’s pace in a loving and respectful environment. Adult supervision is essential at all times around water.
