Japan vs Korea | Highlights | AVC Women's Continental Championship 2026. Japan delivered another impressive performance at the 2026 AVC Women’s Volleyball Continental Championship, defeating Korea 3–0 in the preliminary phase in Tianjin, China.

The match was played on August 23, 2026, as Match No. 9 in Pool C. Japan claimed the victory in straight sets with a final score of 33–31, 25–19 and 25–20.

The opening set was easily the most dramatic part of the match. Japan and Korea remained locked together deep into extra points, with both teams repeatedly fighting for the advantage. Korea showed incredible determination and pushed one of Asia’s strongest teams to the limit, but Japan remained composed during the decisive moments and eventually secured the set 33–31.

After surviving that intense battle, Japan became increasingly confident and took control of the match. Their attacking quality, serving pressure and strong play at the net allowed them to win the second set 25–19. Korea continued to compete in the third set, but Japan maintained its rhythm and closed it 25–20 to complete the straight-sets victory.

Yukiko Wada was Japan’s leading scorer and the top scorer of the match with 19 points. She recorded 15 attack points, two blocks and two service aces, demonstrating her ability to contribute in every scoring department.

Yoshino Sato was also outstanding for Japan, finishing with 18 points from 16 successful attacks and two blocks. Together, Wada and Sato produced 37 points and formed the attacking foundation of Japan’s victory.

Na Hyunsoo was Korea’s leading performer with 15 points, including 12 attack points, two service aces and one block. She provided Korea with its most consistent offensive threat, particularly during the incredibly close opening set.

This was Japan’s second victory of the competition and moved the team to six points in Pool C. The result also made Japan the first team to officially secure a place in the quarterfinals, as they could no longer finish lower than second in their pool.

Korea moved to a 1–1 record with three points after previously opening its campaign with a victory over Vietnam. Although the final score was 3–0, the incredible 33–31 opening set showed that Korea were capable of challenging one of the strongest teams in Asia.

Japan entered the match ranked sixth in the FIVB World Ranking and were considered one of the leading contenders for the continental title. The tournament also carried major international importance, with qualification opportunities connected to the 2027 FIVB Volleyball World Cup and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Japanese middle blocker Airi Miyabe praised Korea’s level after the match and explained that defeating an opponent of this quality meant a lot to the Japanese team. She also emphasized that Japan still had areas to improve despite recording a convincing straight-sets victory.

Japan’s win was built around three important elements: surviving Korea’s strongest period in the opening set, receiving excellent offensive production from Yukiko Wada and Yoshino Sato, and maintaining concentration after the emotional 33–31 finish.

Korea pushed Japan to the limit early in the match, but Japan’s attacking efficiency, squad depth and composure during the decisive moments ultimately made the difference.
