2026 Race Bike Of The Year REVEALED! | Giant Vs Cervélo Vs Eddy Merckx

Race bikes are the ultimate expression of speed on the road.

Designers and engineers work tirelessly to wring out every ounce of pace to provide racers with the ideal tool to compete.

Be it through aerodynamics, weight, handling, or a combination of all three.

We’ve seen some great bikes over recent years, with last years winner Cervélo’s S5 and the all-conquering Colnago Y1RS showing a forward-thinking approach to race bike design.

Then there’s the outlandish aero of Factor’s One, the aero Merida Reacto that’s light on drag and wallet. Not forgetting the cheapest bike in the Peloton Cube’s Litening C:68.

The latest generation of race bikes are becoming more accommodating; geometry has gotten less extreme as aerodynamic and biometric knowledge has increased. That’s why our trio of top performing bikes for the 2026 Race Bike of the Year category are all as fast as ever, but easier to ride.

Of course, they’re still not ‘endurance’ bike comfort orientated but they’re all leagues ahead of race bikes from just a few years ago when it comes to balancing speed and comfort.

Our three contenders to take the Race bike of the year title are Giant’s fourth generation Propel: it's lighter than ever, with TCR matching geometry. That makes it aero bike fast on the flat, and light enough for the toughest climbs.

Next, it’s the radical Merckx 525R, I’ve found the 525R to be everything I’d want of an aero race bike; its devastatingly rapid, light, and handles with a sharpness that makes every ride a thrill. It also gains a new more progressive geometry that makes it more accommodating to more riders.

Finally, it’s the Cervélo Soloist, a bike that blends Cervélo’s aero knowledge with a more practical outlook. The Soloist is as fast and sharp as any of us would need, yet its priced way under equivalently equipped models from Cervélo’s pro tour stable. It could just be the ideal bike for racing privateers.
