The 2023 NFL Draft. Jaxon Smith-Njigba said he wanted to be a top 5 pick. He went 20th to the Seahawks, still the first receiver taken.
Then the rookie year started with a fractured wrist and surgery in August. He played Week 1 anyway.
As a rookie he caught two game-winning touchdowns in the final minute. The first came against Cleveland with 38 seconds left. The second was on Monday Night Football against the Eagles: Drew Lock found him for 29 yards with 28 seconds to go. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, no rookie since 1960 had caught two last-minute game-winners in the same season.
The rookie line was 63 catches for 628 yards. Year two was 100 catches, 1,130 yards and his first Pro Bowl, and per Next Gen Stats he led the entire NFL in receiving yards from the slot.
DK Metcalf had 992 yards that same season.
So by the time Seattle traded Metcalf, they weren’t trading their best receiver. By the yardage, they traded their second-best one.
