How Injuries Could Derail the Bengals Defense in 2026The Cincinnati Bengals made major investments in their defense this offseason, adding proven veterans like Dexter Lawrence, Jonathan Allen, Boye Mafe, Bryan Cook, and Kyle Dugger, while developing young talents such as Myles Murphy, Shemar Stewart, and rookie Cashius Howell. On paper, this unit looks transformed and capable of complementing Joe Burrow’s offense. Yet history shows that injuries remain the biggest threat to derailing their 2026 hopes. The Bengals’ defense has been repeatedly gutted by the injury bug in recent seasons. In 2025, key contributors missed significant time, contributing to one of the league’s worst units. Pass rushers, interior linemen, and linebackers were particularly vulnerable. Even with improved depth, the new-look Bengals defense relies heavily on several high-mileage or previously injury-prone players.
Dexter Lawrence and Jonathan Allen form a formidable interior duo, but both have battled nagging injuries and durability questions throughout their careers. If either (or both) miss extended time, the rotation thins quickly despite pieces like B.J. Hill, T.J. Slaton, and Kris Jenkins. Depth helps, but losing starters in the trenches often leads to schematic breakdowns and exhausted backups.
On the edge, Boye Mafe and Myles Murphy are expected to anchor the pass rush. Murphy has shown flashes but remains relatively unproven over a full season, while Mafe is coming off a big contract. Shemar Stewart and Cashius Howell add youth and upside, but inexperience means the group lacks proven reliability if star players go down. A repeat of prior years’ edge attrition (like Trey Hendrickson’s issues) could cripple quarterback pressure.
The linebacker room continues to look thin. With names like Barrett Carter, Demetrius Knight, and Oren Burks, the unit lacks star power and proven depth. Injuries here were a major issue previously; another wave could expose the run defense and passing coverage.
The secondary gained Bryan Cook and Kyle Dugger, which should help, but corners like Daxton Hill, DJ Turner, and others have dealt with their share of ailments. One or two key absences in the back end often leads to big plays allowed and tired pass rushers.NFL seasons are marathons. Even with better depth than before, the Bengals’ revamped defense has limited margin for error. Multiple significant injuries — especially along the defensive line — could cause the unit to regress, forcing the offense to carry an unsustainable burden. Durability will ultimately determine whether this group takes a leap or collapses again in 2026.
