Iran defeated China 3–1 in one of the closest and most competitive matches of the pool phase at the 2026 AVC Men’s Continental Championship. Iran won the match 25–23, 23–25, 25–22, 25–23. Every set was decided by only two or three points, showing just how evenly matched the two Asian volleyball powers were throughout the contest.

Iran captured a tense opening set 25–23 after executing more effectively in the decisive rallies. China responded strongly in the second set, improving its attack and claiming another close finish 25–23 to level the match at 1–1.

The third set became a major turning point. China stayed close, but Iran created the separation it needed through strong serving pressure and won the set 25–22. The fourth set was even more dramatic, with the teams fighting point for point until the score reached 23–23. Iran remained composed, won the final two rallies and closed the set 25–23 to complete the 3–1 victory.

The statistics demonstrated how close the match was. Iran and China both recorded 62 attacking points and eight blocks. However, Iran applied greater serving pressure and performed better during the most important moments. China committed 25 errors across the four sets, which prevented Vital Heynen’s team from converting several promising positions into set victories.

Wang Bin led China with 18 points, while experienced opposite Jiang Chuan contributed 14 points. Wang Bin finished the three-match pool phase with 42 points, making him China’s leading scorer, while Zhang Jingyin recorded 35 points.

The victory completed a perfect pool phase for Roberto Piazza and Iran. The defending Asian champions finished Pool B with three victories, no defeats and nine points, securing first place in the group. China finished second with two victories, one defeat and six points. Both teams advanced to the quarterfinals, with China receiving the fifth seed and earning a matchup against South Korea.

This was not a one-sided 3–1 match. Iran scored 98 points and China scored 93, meaning only five points separated the teams across four sets. Three of the four sets finished 25–23, and the result was determined by composure, consistency and execution under pressure.

Iran delivered its best volleyball when every point mattered, handling the decisive rallies better and maintaining control during the closing stages of the sets. China matched Iran in attack and blocking, but Iran’s serving pressure and superior end-game execution ultimately made the difference.
