Tailored Programing for Every Athlete
Dan stresses that no two athletes are the same, and their training programs shouldn’t be either.
He begins all his consultations with a thorough assessment of the individual - considering their experience level, goals, and current routine. For example, a channel swimmer preparing for a long-distance event might require a gradual build-up over several years, focusing on endurance, while a collegiate sprinter would need short-term cycles with intense speed and strength development.

The Integration of Drylands
A cornerstone of Dan’s philosophy is combining land-based strength training with swim-specific practice.
He customizes dryland programs to complement pool performance, using pushing and pulling exercises that directly contribute to stroke power, efficiency, and injury prevention.
Dan also ensures dryland training fits seamlessly into an athlete's schedule, emphasizing that even 2-3 focused sessions per week can yield significant results.
Using Technology and Data
Dan incorporates cutting-edge technology like EOSwimBetter and video analysis to make training precise and measurable. These tools allow him to move beyond subjective assessments and provide athletes with clear, actionable feedback on their strokes and mechanics.
Video analysis gives swimmers a visual breakdown of their underwater movements, pinpointing inefficiencies like uneven stroke rates or improper propulsion.
EOSwimBetter add another layer by measuring force output, stroke symmetry, and consistency over time, helping Dan quantify the results of technique adjustments.
This data-driven approach not only accelerates improvements but also fosters a collaborative environment, as Dan can work alongside other coaches using shared metrics to refine training plans.

Avoiding Overuse Injuries
Freestyle swimmers are particularly prone to repetitive strain injuries, especially in the shoulders.
Dan addresses this by focusing on muscular balance and joint health, ensuring athletes building strength in a balanced way. He integrates opposing movements (like backstroke) into swim routines to counteract the repetitive forward-reaching actions of freestyle.
Dan also encourages varying stroke types and including individual medley (IM) training to reduce repetitive stress while improving overall athleticism and performance.
Youth Development and Specialization
Dan advocates for age-appropriate strength training for young athletes, emphasizing safety and proper mechanics. He believes building a foundation of strength and movement skills at a young age can foster long-term success.
For younger swimmers, he focuses on introducing basic exercises like squats and bodyweight movements to teach proper form and build confidence in the gym
