Brazil vs Italy | Highlights | Semifinals VNL 2026. Brazil and Italy met in one of the most anticipated matches of the 2026 FIVB Women's Volleyball Nations League, facing off in the semifinals in Macau on 25 July 2026. It was a clash between two of the world's strongest teams and a rematch of several recent major encounters, including the 2025 VNL Final won by Italy. The winner would advance to the VNL Final, while the loser would play for the bronze medal.
Italy entered the match as the reigning Olympic and VNL champions and once again looked dominant throughout the tournament. Julio Velasco's side qualified comfortably for the Finals before sweeping the Netherlands 3-0 in the quarterfinals, showcasing their outstanding serving, blocking, defensive organisation and balanced attack. Brazil, led by legendary coach Josรฉ Roberto Guimarรฃes, reached the semifinals after defeating Japan 3-1 in the quarterfinals, recovering brilliantly after losing the opening set. Their physicality, resilience and experience once again proved decisive on the biggest stage.
This semifinal was another chapter in what has become arguably the greatest rivalry in women's international volleyball over the last few seasons. Earlier in the 2026 VNL preliminary round, Brazil handed Italy one of their few defeats of the season with a thrilling 3-2 victory (25-15, 25-22, 22-25, 24-26, 15-12) in Brasรญlia. However, Italy had won many of the biggest recent encounters, including the 2025 VNL Final, and entered the semifinals determined to continue their dominance in major tournaments.
Brazil once again relied on captain Gabi Guimarรฃes, whose leadership, world-class passing and attacking made her the heart of the team. Ana Cristina provided another powerful offensive option from the outside, while Brazil's excellent defence, quick transition play and aggressive serving remained their biggest strengths. Josรฉ Roberto Guimarรฃes' team combined athleticism with tactical discipline and had shown throughout the tournament that they could challenge any opponent.
Italy arguably possessed the most complete roster in international volleyball. Paola Egonu remained the team's primary offensive weapon and one of the world's best opposites, while Myriam Sylla continued to provide elite all-around play as an outside hitter. Middle blockers Sarah Fahr and captain Anna Danesi anchored one of the strongest blocking units in the tournament, while setter Alessia Orro orchestrated Italy's fast and balanced offence with exceptional precision.
The tactical battle promised several fascinating matchups. Brazil's block would focus on slowing down Paola Egonu, while Italy aimed to contain Gabi Guimarรฃes and Ana Cristina. The duel between Gabi and Sylla featured two of the world's premier outside hitters, both contributing heavily in attack, reception and defence. Serving pressure was expected to play a decisive role, with both teams looking to disrupt first-ball offence and gain control of the middle attack.
Italy reached the semifinals after an impressive quarterfinal performance against the Netherlands, winning in straight sets while dominating with efficient blocking and consistent attacking. Brazil earned their place by overcoming Japan 3-1 in another high-quality performance that highlighted their fighting spirit and offensive depth.
For Brazil, the keys to victory included limiting Egonu's scoring opportunities, applying constant pressure from the service line, winning long defensive rallies and receiving major offensive contributions from Gabi and Ana Cristina. Italy's success depended on establishing their middle attack early, maintaining excellent reception, using their blocking advantage and allowing Egonu to finish crucial rallies in difficult moments.
With a place in the 2026 Women's Volleyball Nations League Final at stake, the semifinal represented another massive showdown between two volleyball powerhouses. It was expected to feature world-class rallies, elite individual performances and tactical excellence from beginning to end, as Brazil attempted to avenge recent championship defeats while Italy looked to continue their reign as the world's best women's volleyball team.
