Michael Andrew was on deck, having swam his final race of the meet, when IU Director of Ops Van Mathias swam a 58.01 in the 100 Breast tonight, breaking Andrew’s 5-year-old American record of 58.14. Andrew, an Olympian in this event, gave props to Van Mathias, and also said he is now the one who will be chasing after the American record once again. Andrew, the defending Pan Pacific Champion, didn’t swim finals of the 100 breast at this meet – he was 1:01.67 for 9th in prelims and scratched out of the B Final. He did have promising results in other events, however, finishing 2nd in the 50 fly (23.08), 50 free (21.78), and 50 breast (26.87), all season best swims. He also took 5th in the 50 back (25.18).
