Duke's Late-Game Meltdown: Why You Never Throw Over the Double Team
Basketball
Duke's late-game execution broke down for a few reasons people aren't talking about.
First, you don't even need to get the ball past half court with five seconds left. No ten-second violation. And in the NBA, there's no closely guarded rule either, so you can hold the ball as long as you want.
But the one thing you absolutely cannot do is throw a lob over a double team. That's coaching 101. Combo knows it. Every player should know it.
Once he jumps in the air with the ball, it's over. He had options. Hold it. Throw it off someone's foot. Anything. But the lob into a trap is the one pass you can never risk in that situation.
Kudos to Mullins for hitting the shot on the other end though. Freshmen make freshman mistakes, but they also make the plays that win games. #shorts
