Perfect Tennis Footwork in 3 Steps - Perfect Tennis (Episode 10)
Footwork is the glue that bonds your entire tennis game together.
You can be a great ball striker, with the world's best forehand, but if your footwork isn't up to par, then that forehand won't mean anything.
Roger Federer famously said
"My game is a lot about footwork, when I move well, I play well"
In this lesson, Coach Simon Konov will show you how to perfect your tennis footwork in three steps.
Step One
The split step - whenever your opponent makes contact with the ball, you should be doing a split step. A wide base that allows you to lower your center of gravity will help you to be balanced in order to move in any direction.
A small jump off the ground allows you to use the court as a spring board to then push off into the direction of the ball
Step Two
First step to the ball - by the time you land off your split step, you should already recognize which side the ball is coming to.
The next step is now to push off towards that side, using an explosive first step (of first few steps)
If you use an explosive first step, you'll build momentum towards the ball and it helps crate time on the shot
Step Three
The recovery - after we make contact, it's vital that we recover into the correct zone, as quickly as possible, in order to reduce the amount of court our opponent can exploit.
If you don't have too much court to cover, then the side shuffle step can work well.
However, on many balls where we have to recover more, the crossover (and sometimes the cross-behind) will be the better option.
This allows you to cover more ground with fewer steps, which is energy efficient over the course of a match.
