The Cincinnati Reds fell to the Cleveland Guardians 6-1 on Wednesday night at Great American Ball Park in a contest that highlighted the visitors’ timely hitting and solid pitching while exposing the home team’s continued offensive struggles. In front of a modest crowd of just over 17,000, the Guardians broke open a scoreless game with a four-run fifth inning and added insurance later to secure the win and claim the season series against their in-state rivals.

Joey Cantillo set the tone for Cleveland early, delivering four scoreless innings with impressive command. The left-hander struck out eight batters while allowing only four hits and one walk, keeping the Reds’ lineup off balance with a mix of pitches that generated swings and misses. His counterpart, Brady Singer, also worked efficiently through the first four frames but ran into trouble in the fifth when the Guardians’ bats finally broke through.

In that pivotal fifth inning, Steven Kwan scored on a single by Travis Bazzana after José Ramírez and Chase DeLauter had reached base. Kyle Manzardo then drew a bases-loaded walk to force in another run, Gabriel Arias walked to bring home a third, and Patrick Bailey’s sacrifice fly plated the fourth. The Reds’ defense and pitching could not escape the jam cleanly, and the deficit proved difficult to overcome.

Cincinnati managed its only run in the bottom of the sixth. Dane Myers reached and later scored on an RBI single by Noelvi Marte, briefly cutting the margin to 4-1. That was as close as the Reds would get. In the top of the seventh, Manzardo provided the decisive blow, launching a 425-foot solo home run to right-center field off reliever Chase Petty. The blast, which exited the bat at over 104 mph, marked Manzardo’s 13th of the season and gave him the team lead. Moments later, Arias scored on a sacrifice fly by Kwan to push the lead to 6-1.

The Guardians’ bullpen then locked things down. After Cantillo’s exit, a series of relievers combined to allow just two more hits over the final five innings while striking out several batters. Cade Smith closed it out in the ninth, preserving the comfortable margin. Cleveland finished with 12 hits overall and played error-free baseball, while the Reds managed only six hits and committed two defensive miscues that contributed to the visitors’ scoring opportunities.

For the Reds, the loss dropped them to 50-57 on the season and further behind in the National League Central standings. Their offense, which has shown flashes of potential with young talent throughout the year, struggled to generate consistent contact against Cantillo and the Guardians’ relief corps. Singer worked into the fifth without allowing an earned run but issued four walks that helped fuel Cleveland’s rally, and the bullpen could not stem the tide once the game opened up.

The Guardians, meanwhile, improved to 56-54 and remained firmly in the thick of the American League Central race. Manzardo’s multi-RBI night and Cantillo’s dominant start provided the kind of complementary performance the club has sought more consistently. The victory also gave Cleveland the edge in the season series against Cincinnati, adding a bit of local bragging rights in the rivalry between the two Ohio clubs.

Overall, the game underscored familiar themes for both teams midway through the second half of the season. Cleveland’s ability to capitalize on walks and deliver with runners in scoring position proved decisive, while Cincinnati’s inability to mount a sustained rally left them searching for answers as they continue to battle for relevance in a competitive division. The final score reflected a night when one team executed better in the key moments, turning a tight pitchers’ duel into a relatively comfortable road win.
