The United States responded immediately in the second set by improving its blocking and reducing unforced errors. Their physical advantage at the net became increasingly apparent as they comfortably won the second set before continuing their momentum to take the third set 25-21.
Japan refused to surrender. In a thrilling fourth set filled with spectacular rallies and clutch plays, the Japanese team fought off match points and edged the USA 28-26 to force a deciding fifth set. The atmosphere inside the arena reached another level as both teams produced some of the best volleyball of the tournament.
In the fifth set, however, the United States' experience and physicality proved decisive. Strong blocking, powerful attacks, and consistent serving helped the Americans pull away before securing the match with a 15-9 victory.
The United States finished the match with advantages in several key statistical categories. They recorded 64 kills compared to Japan's 60, dominated the blocking battle 10-3, and also led in service aces with four compared to Japan's one. While Japan excelled in defense and ball control throughout the match, the Americans' superior height and blocking ultimately made the difference.
Captain Yuki Ishikawa delivered another outstanding all-around performance. He carried much of Japan's offensive responsibility while also contributing heavily in serve reception and defense. Ishikawa remained calm under pressure and was consistently Japan's most reliable attacker during the five-set battle.
Ran Takahashi, still early in his international career at the time, impressed with his all-around game. Although he was not Japan's primary scorer, his passing, defense, court awareness, and smart attacking decisions made him one of the team's most valuable players. Takahashi's calmness under pressure continued to show why he was regarded as one of volleyball's brightest young stars.
For the United States, several experienced players stepped up after the slow start. Aaron Russell delivered key points throughout the comeback, while TJ DeFalco provided powerful attacks from the outside. Veteran middle blocker David Smith dominated at the net with timely blocks, and setter Micah Christenson expertly distributed the offense, helping the Americans find their rhythm after losing the opening set.
The contrast in playing styles made this one of the most entertaining matches of the 2022 Volleyball Nations League. Japan relied on speed, technical precision, outstanding defense, and quick attacks, while the United States countered with superior height, powerful hitting, and dominant blocking. The fourth set, which Japan won 28-26 to force a deciding fifth set, remains one of the most memorable sets of the entire tournament.
The victory improved the United States to a 3-0 record in the 2022 Volleyball Nations League and kept their unbeaten start alive. Although Japan suffered the defeat, their performance earned widespread praise and confirmed that they were becoming one of the world's strongest volleyball nations. Japan would later qualify for the VNL Finals, while the USA continued its successful campaign toward the knockout stage.
Overall, Japan vs. USA at the 2022 Volleyball Nations League is remembered as one of the tournament's best matches. It featured spectacular rallies, dramatic momentum swings, elite defensive plays, and outstanding performances from Yuki Ishikawa, Yuji Nishida, Ran Takahashi, Aaron Russell, TJ DeFalco, David Smith, and Micah Christenson, making it a classic five-set battle between two of the world's top volleyball teams.
