Mijaín López, “El Gigante” of Greco-Roman wrestling from Cuba, achieved a historic milestone at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. With his victory in the over 130 kg weight class against Chilean Yasmani Acosta, who also has Cuban roots, López secured his fifth consecutive gold medal with a convincing 6-0 victory.
This makes him the first Olympian to win five gold medals in a single discipline. Cuban wrestler Milaimis Marin also won an impressive bronze medal in the 76 kg weight class on the last day of competition at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. She defeated world number one Aiperi Medet from Kyrgyzstan with a clear 6-0 victory and celebrated this unexpected success with great enthusiasm.
Cuba won a total of nine medals at the Olympic Games: two gold, one silver, and six bronze medals. This puts Cuba in 32nd place in the medal table, its worst result since its first participation in the Olympics in Paris in 1900.
