In a surprise turn of events, Watson Nguyen of Penn took the 50 Breast national title last night in Irvine, swimming to a huge PB of 26.65. Nguyen, a 4x medalist from the 2023 World Jr Championships, is now finding success in breaststroke at Penn, something that is quickly becoming a trend.
We've seen Penn produce a national champion in the 50 breast 14 years ago in Brendan McHugh, as well as more recently in the 200 Breast with Matt Fallon. We've also seen fellow Ivy Leaguer Jack Kelly of Brown find massive success in breaststroke.
Nguyen is still trying to balance moving his academics and career along, but has been able to put enough focus into his swimming this summer to call himself a national champion.
