The Thunder went wire to wire in San Antonio on opening night, and the play everyone is still arguing about is SGA's spin into a step through. Did he travel? We put it in 3D and worked through it frame by frame.
It comes down to which foot you call the gather. If the dribble ends with the left foot down, the right is the pivot and he traveled the instant he lifted it on the spin. But his left never moved, which lets you call that the pivot instead. From there it is the rule on what a pivot foot can do: you pivot on one axis, the ball or the heel, and you can rock between them, but you cannot pivot again on the new axis. By the nitpickiest reading, that last move is a travel. By the standard that actually matters, whether he changed his location on the floor, it is not.
Then the rest of the game. How Mark Daigneault gets SGA attacking out of false Iverson action and the weakside pin down, the footwork on the catch that makes his jab step unguardable, and why Stephon Castle had no chance on the fake.
On the other side, Victor Wembanyama was incredible defensively and a net negative on offense. Not enough elbow touches, bounce passes that are wrong for someone that tall, too many possessions reduced to high ball screens and rolls, and how OKC went under screens to let Chet Holmgren contain and recover instead of ever giving up the switch San Antonio wanted.
Plus the four-three-pointer gap, the blown X out that left Jared McCain wide open, the Spurs zone that dissolved into confusion before turning back into man, and why I think De'Aaron Fox is the weak link holding this roster back.
