The Cincinnati Bengals opened 2026 training camp with the energy and intensity fans have been waiting months to see, but the excitement quickly gave way to concern after a potentially significant injury overshadowed an otherwise spirited first practice.

The biggest storyline from Day 1 was second-year defensive end Shemar Stewart, who suffered a left knee injury during 11-on-11 drills. Stewart's leg appeared to buckle on the play, and he was unable to put weight on it before being carted off the field. He was later seen using crutches and wearing a brace, though the team has not yet announced the severity of the injury. Losing Stewart for any length of time would be a disappointing setback for a young defender expected to take on a larger role in 2026.
The other headline came from a fiery practice scuffle involving Ja'Marr Chase and the Bengals' secondary. After a physical rep, Chase ripped off DJ Turner II's helmet and threw it across the field before jawing with several defenders. The confrontation escalated briefly with Jalen Davis stepping in, but coaches and teammates quickly separated everyone before punches were thrown. Both players later downplayed the incident, describing it as the competitive nature of training camp rather than any lingering issue inside the locker room.
Outside of the drama, Joe Burrow looked sharp in his first training camp action, delivering crisp throws and showing strong chemistry with his receiving corps. The offense operated efficiently throughout much of practice, while the defense showcased the aggressive mentality new coordinator Al Golden has emphasized heading into the season.
While Day 1 featured the usual excitement that comes with football returning, it also served as a reminder of how quickly fortunes can change. The Bengals will now await encouraging news on Stewart's knee while hoping the competitive edge displayed throughout practice—including the brief altercation—is a sign of a team determined to return to playoff contention in 2026.
