In this episode, William Kane, Ben Crane, and Webb Simpson are in Week 6 of the book of Proverbs.
"Sticks and stones can break your bones, but words can bring life or death. What does the Bible really say about our words?"
Because we speak thousands of words every day, perhaps there is no area of our lives where we need wisdom more than in our speech. Other than wisdom itself, Proverbs gives more attention to speech than any other topic.
Austin Smotherman gets his first win in Utah. Tour goes to Japan this week.
Bible Study: Week 6 in Proverbs, anchored by Proverbs 18:21 — "Death and life are in the power of the tongue." The guys cover seven guidelines for wise speech:
- Speak truthfully — "Every word of God proves true" (Proverbs 30:5). God hates dishonesty in all its forms: lies, flattery, and empty promises (Proverbs 12:22, 26:28, 14:23).
- Speak aptly — "A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver" (Proverbs 25:11). Speak the right words at the right time (Proverbs 18:2, 15:2, 27:14, 15:23).
- Speak slowly — "When words are many, transgression is not lacking" (Proverbs 10:19). "Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him" (Proverbs 29:20).
- Speak graciously — "There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing" (Proverbs 12:18). "Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body" (Proverbs 16:24).
- Speak calmly — "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger" (Proverbs 15:1). "With patience a ruler may be persuaded, and a soft tongue will break a bone" (Proverbs 25:15).
- Speak and listen carefully — "The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels" (Proverbs 18:8). "For lack of wood the fire goes out, and where there is no whisperer, quarreling ceases" (Proverbs 26:20).
- Speak the best words — "The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and whoever captures souls is wise" (Proverbs 11:30). "Like cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country" (Proverbs 25:25).
Bad news: "On the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak" (Matthew 12:36). Good news: "On the cross, Jesus loved us so much that His sacrifice deleted the damning record before God of every foolish word you and I have ever spoken. He took the divine condemnation for our lies, insults, gossips, put-downs, bragging, false promises, and griping, as well as our guilty silence when we should have spoken up. He took it all onto Himself and hit the delete button."
