Simeon Birnbaum won the NCAA 1500m final in 3:36.05, beating second place by 1.13 seconds in a wire-to-wire performance that compressed everyone else in the field into a 4-second window from 2nd through 12th. He pulled away in the first 120 meters of the last 200 and was celebrating with 80 meters still to run.
The race confirmed what everyone watching college distance running has been saying for two seasons: Birnbaum is operating on a different level than his NCAA peers.
In this video, we break down the race itself — Birnbaum's positioning at the bell, the closing speed, and what executing this cleanly tells us about his fitness — and then get into the bigger question: where does he fit in the US 1500m picture as a professional?
