Julian Alaphilippe recently won the Velo d'Or award for best cyclist in 2019. I think on paper, Annemiek van Vleuten had a better season, but she was only placed 5th because of an implicit bias against the value of womens' races. I think the simple solution is to have a separate female Velo d'Or award, as is the case with the Ballon D'or Feminin.
