Ortiz joined in June 2025, allegedly receiving $12,000 in bribes for two rigged pitches in games against the Seattle Mariners and St. Louis Cardinals, contributing another $60,000 to the total haul of over $450,000. Both players, already on indefinite paid administrative leave since late July after betting integrity alerts flagged suspicious activity, face up to 65 years in prison if convicted, with Ortiz arrested in Boston and Clase not yet in custody; their attorneys vehemently deny the allegations, vowing to fight in court, while MLB vows full cooperation and could impose lifetime bans under Rule 21, further tarnishing the league's integrity amid a broader U.S. sports betting crackdown.
