19.67 at 18?! Examining Gout Gout World Record Everyone Is Arguing About
Running
Australian sprinting phenom Gout Gout clocked a stunning 19.67 seconds in the 200m at the Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney on Sunday — the 16th fastest time in history and a new Under-20 world record for the 18-year-old. He shattered his own national record of 20.02 by 0.26 seconds.
But the performance has drawn skepticism. Seven of eight finalists ran personal bests, with second-place Aidan Murphy slashing more than half a second off his previous best. Critics, including Olympic gold medalist Justin Gatlin, questioned whether the conditions — a newly resurfaced track and a favorable wind — inflated the times.
Gout pushed back, saying he had been chasing a legal sub-20 for years and had "more in the tank." His coach and organizers pointed to the track's new Polytan surface, designed for better energy return, as a legitimate performance enhancer.
We look at all the explanations.
