Cincinnati Reds edged the Athletics 6-5 on August 6, 2026, completing a three-game sweep at Great American Ball Park.

Elly De La Cruz set the tone immediately. Leading off the bottom of the first against Athletics starter Mason Barnett, the dynamic shortstop crushed his 19th home run of the season—his fourth career leadoff blast—to give the Reds a quick 1-0 lead. Cincinnati would ultimately hit four solo home runs on the afternoon, powering a hard-fought victory that improved their record to 56-58 and extended their strong post-All-Star form to 13-6.

The Athletics (45-70), mired in an eight-game losing streak and having dropped 12 consecutive series, answered in the top of the fourth. Andrew Abbott, who had retired seven straight batters earlier, ran into trouble. Singles by Henry Bolte and Tommy White, followed by a walk to Jonah Heim, loaded the bases. Tyler Soderstrom delivered a two-run single to put the visitors ahead 2-1. Heim then scored on a double-play grounder, stretching the Athletics’ lead to 3-1.

Cincinnati wasted little time responding. In the bottom of the fourth, Sal Stewart led off with his 25th home run of the season, a towering shot that moved him into second place on the Reds’ all-time rookie home-run list behind only Frank Robinson’s 38 in 1956. Two batters later, Tyler Stephenson launched his 10th homer of the year to knot the score at 3-3.

The Reds took the lead for good in the fifth through patience at the plate. With the bases loaded, Athletics reliever Elvis Alvarado issued consecutive walks to Eugenio Suárez and Dane Myers, plating Matt McLain and Stewart and pushing Cincinnati ahead 5-3. JJ Bleday added insurance in the seventh with his 20th home run of the season, a solo shot that made it 6-3.

Abbott earned the win with a solid outing, working 6⅔ innings and allowing three earned runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out four. It was his longest start of the season. Barnett took the loss after surrendering five runs in 4⅓ innings. The Athletics mounted a late threat in the ninth when Brian Serven homered off closer Brock Burke for a two-run shot, cutting the deficit to one. Burke settled down to retire the next two batters and secure his second save of the year.

The victory capped a successful home series for the Reds, who swept the Athletics for their third series sweep of the season and first since mid-April. It also marked their fourth consecutive home win. For a Cincinnati club sitting in the middle of the National League Central pack, such results against struggling opponents are essential if they hope to climb the standings and contend for a postseason berth in the season’s final stretch.

The Athletics, meanwhile, continued their difficult campaign, heading next to face the Boston Red Sox with little momentum. De La Cruz, Stewart, Stephenson, and Bleday provided the power, Abbott delivered quality innings, and the Reds showed enough resilience to hold off a late rally—hallmarks of a team finding its stride in August.

The final score stood Reds 6, Athletics 5, with Cincinnati improving to 29-31 at home and completing a clean sweep in front of the Great American Ball Park crowd on a sunny Thursday afternoon.
