In this episode, Webb Simpson, Ben Crane, and William Kane unpack Matthew 5:31–32 and Jesus’ teaching on marriage and divorce from the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus’ words remind us that because of where marriage comes from and what it is, disciples of Jesus are called to hold marriage in the highest regard. Divorce, according to Jesus’ teaching, should be a last-ditch option, allowable only under the circumstances of adultery or abandonment.
Given where marriage came from and what God intends for it, it’s impossible to have too high a view of marriage. Marriage is designed to be an unbreakable bond between one man and one woman, all in order to point the watching world to Jesus Christ. As a result, disciples of Jesus should do whatever we can to preserve our marriages.
If you’re looking for biblical teaching on Matthew 5, the Sermon on the Mount, Christian marriage, divorce in the Bible, and discipleship, this episode walks carefully through Jesus’ words and what they mean for followers of Christ today.
