Jakob Ingebrigtsen won the European 5000m gold in Birmingham on Monday in his first race in 11 months, after February surgery on the sheath around his left Achilles. He crossed in 13:15.29, edging Germany's Florian Bremm (13:15.60) and France's Etienne Daguinos (13:16.09) after a home-straight sprint that erased many of the pre-race questions about whether he was actually ready to return.
He was 20th of 23 through 3000m and more than three seconds off Dominic Lobalu's split. Then he moved from 19th to first over a single lap with a mile to go. Spent most of the last lap boxed on the rail in third. Still boxed rounding the turn. Then he found a seam between Bremm and Daguinos and was gone. The final lap was 54.8. The last 200 was 26.4. The last 100 was 12.7. This marked his fourth straight European 5000m title. He improves to seven-for-seven at European outdoor championships. That is now fifteen consecutive European titles across all age groups and surfaces.
In this video, we work through what the win actually tells us about where Jakob is right now. The obvious answer is: he's back and healthy enough to contend with the best.
