The Longest Home Run in T-Mobile Park History | The Story of Lazaro Montes

Lazaro Montes hit a baseball 474 feet at T-Mobile Park on September 8th. It was the longest home run ever tracked in that ballpark, it tied Fernando Tatis Jr. for the longest anybody in baseball hit this season, and the manager who has been in that building 81 games a year said he'd never seen one go further.

He's also striking out 44.4% of the time.

Both of those are true, and this video deals with both. We go back to Barreras, Cuba, where a seven-year-old took 150 swings a day at limestone pebbles with a broomstick, taught by a father who was a three-time Cuban national champion in the hammer throw. We go through the minor league climb, the year Double-A ate him alive, and the 38 homers that followed. And we get into the Statcast numbers that explain how a 21-year-old does this, including the one boring measurement that explains both the 474 feet and the swing-and-miss at the same time.

Then we test the Yordan Álvarez comparison against every hitter in baseball built like him, and the answer isn't what I expected.
