Max and the panel discuss the use of VAR for “mistaken identity” with Guardian US football correspondent Pablo Iglesias Maurer. USA captain Tim Ream was booked after a tackle on Paraguay winger Miguel Almirón. However upon VAR review referee Danny Makkelie overturned his decision and instead booked Almirón for simulation, making Ream the first player at a World Cup to benefit from such a decision.
The panel agree that this was a correct usage of VAR, even if incidents like this were not what it was designed for.
