North Carolina was tested but came away with an 80-72 victory over the Western Carolina Catamounts in Michael Malone's debut as head coach. Four players scored in double figures for the Tar Heels, led by transfer Matt Able, who scored 18 points on 6-10 shooting from the floor. Terrence Brown made some clutch plays and finished with 14 points, Neo Avdalas scored 13, including a huge 4-point play late in the game, and Maximo Adams added 10 points for Malone's crew. Both defenses were stout, and the Tar Heels held Western to 34% shooting from the floor in the win.
