Japan vs Thailand | Semi Finals Highlights | AVC Women's Continental Championship 2026. Thailand produced one of the biggest victories of the tournament, defeating Japan 3–1 in the semifinals of the 2026 AVC Women’s Continental Championship. The match was played on August 29, 2026, at the Tianjin Olympic Center Gymnasium in Tianjin, China. Thailand won 25–21, 25–20, 20–25, 25–20 to eliminate the highest-ranked Asian team and advance to the championship match.

Japan entered the semifinal in outstanding form. The Japanese team had won all four of its previous matches without dropping a set, defeating Hong Kong, South Korea and Vietnam in the preliminary phase before sweeping Chinese Taipei 3–0 in the quarterfinals. Thailand was also undefeated, recording victories over Australia, Indonesia and Kazakhstan before eliminating South Korea 3–0 in the quarterfinals.

Thailand started confidently in the opening set. The teams were tied at 9–9 before Thailand gradually took control, moving ahead 16–15 and playing cleaner volleyball during the decisive final rallies. Japan committed several costly errors under pressure, allowing Thailand to close the first set 25–21.

Thailand continued to dictate the tempo in the second set. Captain and setter Pornpun Guedpard distributed the ball effectively across the net, preventing Japan’s blockers from settling into a predictable defensive rhythm. Thailand moved ahead 9–7, while a productive serving sequence from middle blocker Thatdao Nuekjang helped increase the advantage to 17–15. Thailand maintained its composure and finished the set 25–20, establishing a commanding 2–0 lead.

Facing elimination, Japan responded in the third set by increasing its serving pressure and improving its floor defense. Japan established an early 7–3 advantage and continued to control the set through faster offense and more aggressive play from captain Mayu Ishikawa. Thailand attempted to change its blocking and defensive organization, but Japan remained in control and won the set 25–20, reducing the match deficit to 2–1.

From that point, Thailand regained its aggressive rhythm. The team defended with determination, kept difficult rallies alive and converted important transition opportunities. Thailand pulled away during the second half of the set and won 25–20, with opposite Pimpichaya Kokram scoring the final point to complete the 3–1 victory.

Mayu Ishikawa was the match’s leading scorer with 23 points, carrying much of Japan’s offense and playing a major role in the third-set comeback. Pimpichaya Kokram led Thailand with 20 points, Sasipapron Janthawisut contributed 16, Thatdao Nuekjang recorded 14 and Chatchu-On Moksri added 10.

Thailand’s starting lineup featured Pornpun Guedpard at setter, Pimpichaya Kokram at opposite, Chatchu-On Moksri and Sasipapron Janthawisut as outside hitters, Thatdao Nuekjang and Kaewkalaya Kamulthala as middle blockers, and Piyanut Pannoy at libero.

The result was significant for several reasons. Thailand eliminated Japan despite Japan being ranked sixth in the world and Thailand being ranked 17th entering the match. Japan had also won four of the previous five meetings between the teams, including a 3–1 victory during the 2026 Volleyball Nations League.

Thailand’s semifinal victory guaranteed the defending Asian champions a place at the 2027 FIVB Women’s World Championship. It also sent Thailand into the final against host nation China, who defeated Iran 3–0 in the other semifinal. In addition to the continental championship, the winner of the final would earn direct qualification for the women’s volleyball tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Japan moved into the bronze-medal match against Iran. Japan later won that match 3–0, while Thailand defeated China 3–2 in the final to retain the Asian title and secure direct qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games.

Overall, Thailand won the semifinal through balanced scoring, intelligent setting, strong serving, resilient floor defense and excellent composure during the decisive moments. Japan showed its quality by recovering in the third set and taking an early lead in the fourth, but Thailand’s comeback from 7–11 in the final set became the defining sequence of the match.
