Hoey was the first American man to win a Diamond League 800m since July 2021. Now he’ll have to try and do it again to keep his hopes of qualifying for the World Championships alive—he placed a surprising fourth at the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Much like Nuguse, Hoey’s the master of his own destiny here. If Wanyonyi or Olympic silver medalist Marco Arop come away with the win, Hoey would likely be the most talented 800m runner in the world watching the World Championships from home.
