From Overseas Player to German National Team Coach — Sidney Parsons' Journey

Director of Player Development Sidney Parsons shared his unique connection to Berlin and the German basketball scene during the Valkyries' World Cup trip. Half German and half American, Parsons grew up splitting time in Germany thanks to his mother's heritage, and what was meant to be a one or two season stint playing overseas after college turned into six years living and playing in the country.

That path led Parsons into coaching, eventually landing him a role with the German national team for about eight years. A mentor's invitation to present at the FIBA International Coaches Clinic brought him back to Berlin, where he's now able to watch Golden State's own athletes compete on basketball's biggest international stage.

Parsons also spoke on the pride of seeing Head Coach Natalie Nakase representing Team USA, drawing on his own understanding of what it means to represent a country at different levels of competition. He reflected on the broader perspective that international basketball offers, noting that having both a presence in the WNBA and connections to global competitions like FIBA speaks to something incredible about where the Valkyries organization stands.
