World Athletics Releases Qualifying Standards For The 2027 World Championships

World Athletics has released the qualifying standards and qualifying system for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing. The standards are harder. The world rankings now carry more weight than ever (60% of entries, up from 50% for Tokyo). And several long-running qualifying loopholes have just been closed.
In this video, we work through everything you need to know:
The qualifying windows for each event group, the new Wild Card system (and the looming USATF problem when two Americans qualify in the same event), and the 40/60 standard-vs-ranking split that defines the entire pathway.
The major changes: indoor 200m tracks no longer count for qualifying standards, which effectively ends Boston University's magic track as a path to Worlds. Discus throws need to come from traditional facilities, which sidelines Throw Town Ramona. And qualifying marks now have to come from Category C or higher meets — a rule that effectively shoots the NCAA system in the foot, since most collegiate meets don't qualify.
We get into the actual difficulty of hitting the standards (only three American men have ever run 12:50 in the 5000m, only two have ever run 26:48 in the 10,000m), why the women's 10,000m standard was the only one made slower, and the loophole that's still open: oversized indoor tracks like the Dempsey at UW.
