Golf Digest Best in State teacher Jeff Isler says the most useful question a golf parent can ask their kid’s coach is a simple one: “Where is my kid relative to his peers now? Be honest with me.”
In this clip from Episode 66 of The Golf Parent, Jeff explains why that honest baseline matters, and what to ask next. What does the road look like? How much should they be practicing? How much should they be playing?
He also points to the moments when parents tend to panic: progress slows, a kid gets stuck, or they seem to be losing interest. Jeff’s view is that those are the best times to go to the coach and ask what’s really going on.
Then there’s money. Jeff tells the story of a strong junior whose parents bought him a launch monitor without asking first. For a kid who should be watching ball flight and feeling turf interaction, all that data may be too much. Some kids handle data well and some don’t. His advice to parents is simple: just ask. The coach gives an honest answer, and the decision stays with you.
