Nikki Hiltz won the Prefontaine Classic mile in 4:17.49 on July 4th, ending Faith Kipyegon's five-year unbeaten streak in 1500m and mile races on the track — 24 consecutive victories dating back to a loss to Sifan Hassan in Florence on June 10, 2021.
Dorcus Ewoi was second in 4:17.62. Kipyegon was third in 4:17.80. Hiltz closed the final 200 in 29 flat.
More people have won Olympic gold medals than have beaten Faith Kipyegon in a mile or 1500m over the last five years. Kyle called this the second-biggest win in the history of the American women's 1500m, behind only Jenny Simpson's 2011 World Championship gold. Whichever way you rank it, it's the biggest race of Nikki Hiltz's career — and the biggest anyone in American middle-distance running has notched in over a decade.
We also get into the Nikki Hiltz fan experience. The reason every one of their wins feels bigger than the last is that Nikki has genuinely leveled up every single season — not skipping steps, not peaking early, just slowly and consistently building toward moments that a decade ago would have seemed impossible.
Plus the context around Kipyegon, which matters. She disclosed on Instagram after the race that she'd been dealing with a hamstring injury, which explains her minimal racing schedule this season and her sub-par time.
