Not the key to happiness…but the key to golf?

Matt Thurmond is the head coach of ASU men’s golf, a two-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year, and a 2024 GCAA Hall of Fame inductee. His players have won the US Amateur and made NCAA Championship runs.
So when he sat down with me on The Golf Parent podcast and said the key to golf is not the key to happiness, I had to sit with that one.
His point: the very best players are almost never satisfied. Fourth place doesn’t feel like an achievement to them, it feels like a question. Why not third? Why not second? That dissatisfaction would be a terrible recipe for a happy life. But it’s exactly the fuel that makes great golfers.
Controversial? Maybe. But it left me asking the harder question: can we nurture that hunger in our kids without burning them out?
A few things I’ve picked up from coaches like Matt:
1. Separate the person from the scorecard. The hunger should live in the golf, not in their worth. “I know you wanted more from today” beats “I’m disappointed.”
2. Let them set the target. Dissatisfaction only works when it’s theirs. A kid chasing your goal burns out. A kid chasing their own goal digs in.
3. Watch the recovery, not the reaction. It’s fine if a bad round stings. It’s a warning sign if it still stings on Thursday. Hunger and misery are not the same thing.
I’m not a coach, just a dad with a microphone trying to understand this game. But the line between driven and unhappy might be the most important one we help our kids draw.
