“The First Win Is Not a Gift From God” | De Zerbi Before Man United

“The first win is not a gift from God. You have to deserve to win, and we didn’t deserve to win so far.” Roberto De Zerbi is blunt before Man United vs Tottenham. He doesn’t believe in luck, he admits he suffered looking at the league table over the break, and he says a Villa-style turnaround is possible, but only if Spurs “do a click”. He diagnoses the problem as Spurs being “two teams”: one that controls games, and one that can’t defend.

In this embargoed section he also calls Dejan Kulusevski an inspiration and reveals he told the squad to learn from his comeback. He says no midfielder starts because of their price tag, and he names the players he wants more from, including Savio, Marmoush, Tonali and Van Hecke. Asked about Luca Williams-Barnett, he says “I’m thinking”, calls the 18-year-old a special talent and explains why a bit of arrogance is good for a footballer.
