The headline matchup is at quarterback, where Joe Burrow and Mayfield lead two offenses capable of turning the opener into a shootout. Burrow enters the season healthy and surrounded by an elite receiving tandem in Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Cincinnati’s biggest offensive question remains whether its offensive line can give Burrow enough time against a revamped Tampa Bay pass rush featuring Vita Vea, Calijah Kancey, Yaya Diaby and first-round rookie Rueben Bain Jr.
Mayfield presents a familiar challenge for Cincinnati. The former Browns quarterback is 6-1 in his career against the Bengals with a 113.8 passer rating, and he has been outstanding in season openers since joining Tampa Bay. Mayfield is 3-0 in Week 1 with the Buccaneers, throwing nine touchdowns without an interception and posting a 114.5 passer rating.

That makes Cincinnati’s rebuilt defense one of the biggest storylines Sunday. The Bengals invested heavily in their defensive front during the offseason, highlighted by the addition of Dexter Lawrence. Cincinnati wants to generate pressure without constantly relying on the blitz, and containing Mayfield while slowing Tampa Bay’s running game will provide an immediate measuring stick for the new-look unit.
Injuries could also play a role. Tampa Bay enters the weekend with receiver Jalen McMillan, running back Sean Tucker and offensive tackle Justin Skule listed as doubtful. Cincinnati is considerably healthier, although defensive end Shemar Stewart is doubtful with a knee injury. Chase and Higgins are cleared to play.

Perhaps most importantly, Cincinnati wants to avoid another sluggish beginning. The Bengals are just 2-4 in season openers since Burrow arrived in 2020 and 9-12-1 overall in September during that span. Against a Tampa Bay team accustomed to starting quickly under Todd Bowles, Cincinnati has an opportunity to immediately change that narrative.

For the Bengals, Sunday represents more than Week 1. With expectations of returning to the postseason, a home victory over a talented Buccaneers team would be an ideal first step toward making 2026 a bounce-back season.
