High School Free Agency? New Mexico's One-TIme Free Transfer Rule Explained - Dusty Young NMAA
Spot Sports video
The NMAA (New Mexico Activities Association) recently approved a bylaw change that specifically refers to the eligibility and transfer rules for high school athletes in the state of New Mexico.
Among the changes, students may now transfer schools without penalty and be immediately eligible at their school of their choice on a first transfer.
The old rule forced athletes to sit out a full academic school year after transferring to a new school with a few exceptions.
Although the transfers and changes will need to be approved by the NMAA beforehand, the bylaw change opens the door for high school athletes to transfer without restriction and introduce the risk of tampering, recruiting, and the idea of assembling 'super-teams'.
We sit down with NMAA Executive Director Dusty Young to ask him what the NMAA intends to do to monitor eligibility, police recruiting, and help influence a health balance of competition.
