The pitching matchup presents a significant challenge for Cincinnati. Lowder enters at 6-10 with a 5.81 ERA over 119⅓ innings. His most recent start also came against Los Angeles, and it was a difficult one. The Dodgers tagged him for seven earned runs on seven hits in just 3⅓ innings last Wednesday at Dodger Stadium. Lowder has now allowed 13 earned runs across his first two September starts, making Tuesday an important opportunity for the 24-year-old to finish his season on a stronger note.

Yamamoto, meanwhile, has been one of baseball’s most dependable starters. The Dodgers right-hander is 13-8 with a 2.62 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 171 strikeouts this season. He has averaged an MLB-best 6.62 innings per start and has accumulated 172 innings while remaining a constant in a Los Angeles rotation that has dealt with injuries.

Cincinnati knows exactly how difficult Yamamoto can be. He faced the Reds just six days ago and dominated, allowing one run on three hits while striking out 10 over seven innings in Los Angeles’ 14-1 victory. That puts additional pressure on the Reds’ lineup to create traffic early rather than allowing Yamamoto to settle into another rhythm.

For Cincinnati, the remainder of the season has shifted toward evaluation after Monday’s loss officially eliminated the Reds from postseason contention. They enter Tuesday at 70-80, while the Dodgers are 91-59 and have already secured a postseason berth. Los Angeles is still playing for positioning near the top of the National League standings.

Elly De La Cruz provided Cincinnati’s biggest highlight Monday with a massive 457-foot home run, but it accounted for the Reds’ only run in the loss. Cincinnati will need more production throughout the lineup Tuesday against one of the National League’s best pitchers.
