In a battle of the two top-ranked teams in the nation, #1 Stanford was in a nil-nil tie in the waning minutes with #2 San Diego. Stanford was looking for one more chance before the game ended. Stanford's Jude Stone had the ball, but he fell. The ball ended up going to a San Diego player who tried to clear it, but freshman Calder Zirn got in the way, and the ball bounced back towards the goalkeeper. Rather than picking up the ball, the San Diego goalkeeper tried to clear the ball, but once again, Zirn challenged the play and got in the way. This time the ball deflected off Zirn with 1:30 left on the clock for the game-winning goal.
