Play the percentages, go cross court, and only go down the line when you have a
good reason to. That is your mantra from the baseline, and for most players it
is very nearly the whole of target selection.
Be smart, be high percentage, play with margin, and give yourself space. Match
the target to your phase of play, which means being honest about how much
trouble you are in and how much trouble they are in, and letting that answer
drive the decision.
Put phase of play and geometry together, stick to whatever is higher percentage,
and you will win a lot of tennis matches on that alone. Just picking those
targets and aiming for those spots on the court is genuinely enough.
The cat and mouse stuff, where you work out what they think you are about to do
and then do the other thing, comes later. More risk, lower margin, taking
offense when you are not in complete control of the point, none of that is worth
worrying about until you are a strong 4.5. Until then the mantra does the work.
