Rhett Lowder's Shift to the Bullpen
The decision to move rookie right-hander Rhett Lowder out of the starting rotation and into a bullpen role comes as the Reds activate Hunter Greene from the injured list. According to manager Terry Francona, this move is designed to protect the young arms and navigate a crowded six-man rotation rather than permanently abandoning Lowder as a starter. The Reds are taking it week-by-week to manage innings and ensure pitchers endure the grind of a full MLB season.
Chase Petty Optioned to Louisville
To clear the necessary 26-man roster spot for Greene's return, the Reds optioned pitching prospect Chase Petty to the Triple-A Louisville Bats. Petty had been up in the majors providing multi-inning relief, where he proved to be a highly valuable arm in high-leverage situations during his recent call-up. While he delivered a solid 4.37 ERA across 22.2 major-league innings, the roster crunch and the return of a frontline starter resulted in his reassignment.
Tony Santillan's Status
The bullpen's depth has taken a step back with reliever Tony Santillan hitting the injured list due to a significant left oblique strain. Santillan, who appeared in 80 games for Cincinnati the previous season, did not even realize when the injury occurred initially, only noticing discomfort while playing catch. Francona noted that because the organization is uncertain of the exact timeline for his recovery, Santillan may end up needing the full 60 days on the injured list. This creates a glaring need for high-leverage relief in a bullpen that has been heavily taxed and ranks among the lower third in the National League.
