The Boks were a far cry from their usual brilliant best, as they just about edged out Uruguay before suffering a one sided defeat to the Spaniards.

Elsewhere, New Zealand and Australia had perfect open days as they both defeated USA and Kenya, setting up a direct showdown for the top spot in Pool C on Saturday.

In Pool B France and Fiji set the standard, both recording strong victories over the Germany and Great Britain sevens.
