World indoor 800m record holder Keely Hodgkinson steps outside her comfort zone Thursday at the Golden Gala Diamond League in Rome, lining up in the 400m against some of the best one-lap specialists in the world — with her eyes firmly on breaking 50 seconds.
The field she's walking into:
Lurdes Gloria Manuel (CZE) — reigning world indoor 400m champion
Amber Anning (GBR) — former world indoor champion
Natalia Bukowiecka (POL) — reigning European champion
Lieke Klaver (NED) — reigning European indoor champion
Henriette Jaeger (NOR) — reigning European U23 champion
During the World Indoor 4x400m final in March (less than an hour after winning the 800m in a championship record), Hodgkinson ran the fastest split in the relay at 50.10, outpacing Klaver and Bukowiecka, who were leading their own teams. She also ran 51.49 in an unchallenged solo 400m indoors earlier this year.
