At the NCHSAA 8A State Championships in Greensboro, Mallard Creek High School appeared to win its fifth consecutive state title when 4x400 anchor Nyan Brown held up five fingers in the final meters of the relay. Then an official raised a yellow flag, the team was disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct, and the title went to Jordan High School instead.
